USUI SHIKI RYOHO REIKI
The word Reiki derives from the Japanese characters for REI (Universal Life) KI (Energy), meaning Universal Life force/Energy. Reiki was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in 1922, in Japan, and since then as continued to evolve as a healing art in today' s world. The Usui Shiki Ryoho system was created as a way to honour the spiritual lineage of where Usui Reiki came from and how it has been passed down over time.
Reiki is a hands-on energy healing therapy and works by channeling universal energy through the therapist, which automatically flows to where it is most needed in the body. The reiki intensifies the vibrational frequency of the recipient, promoting a healthier mind, body and spirit. Therapists act as a channel so that the energy is transferred to the recipient through the laying of hands on the body, whilst areas of congested energy are identified along with the possible cause (spiritual, mental, emotional or physical). This not only heals the four connected areas, but also restores balance and health to the client.
These days there are many modalities/schools around the world termed as ‘Reiki’ and many discrepancies around what is considered "original" Usui Reiki. Each modalities system may focus on different aspects of Usui's original teachings (physical healing, spirituality, 5 principles, meditation practices etc) and may also be influenced by the teachers own experiences, understanding and interpretation of the teachings. In recent years more information/research is surfacing to shine more light on the origins of this healing art. Thanks to the dedication of many Reiki professionals seeking out more accurate details to ensure the methods and teachings are preserved .
THE EVOLUTION OF REIKI
One consistency that many researchers have discovered is the indication that Usui's teachings were often adapted in accordance to each students level, understanding and development. (Including Sensei Hayashi, who helped forge the path of bringing Reiki to the mainstream.) Hayashi was encouraged to develop and evolve what he had learnt by combining it with his own field of knowledge in the medical field, resulting in many Reiki modalities these days that emphasis the wonderful physical healing benefits of Reiki. This mentality has been adapted by many practitioners over the years, in the East and West, which is why you will often see many different varieties and modalities of Reiki.
FINDING THE RIGHT PRACTITIONER/TEACHER
When considering a treatment, or learning it is important to focus on the simplicity and purity of what Reiki was intended for- self mastery through spiritual growth, healing and a commitment to following the core 5 principles of Usui Sensei's teachings to assist your journey. Each individual will be attracted to a certain teacher or modality that is relevant to their own needs and best for their well being at that moment in time. Be sure to do your research to find the right reacher or practitioner for you. Always ask questions about the training, standards and any concerns to ensure you are receiving authentic Reiki!
