There are many questions that normally arise whether you are considering your first Reiki treatment, or to learn. Here are a list of commonly asked questions by my clients. If you have any specific questions please feel free to contact me directly.
What exactly is Reiki? Reiki is a hands on energy transfer healing known as "Universal Life Force/Energy", founded by Dr Mikao Usui in 1922, Japan. The therapist acts as a channel for "Universal life energy" which is attuned to them during their learning, and then channeled to the clients to assist in balancing their mind, body and spirit. This process is done by working through the 7 chakras, and identifying how they connect with our spiritual, emotional, mental and physical bodies. The treatments works on identifying our blockages, and releasing them from our system so we are more in harmony and aligned. Reiki is available to anyone who is open to it, regardless of age, gender, race and religion.
I see many different names/types of Reiki? What is the difference? There is only one genuine form of Reiki, the Usui Shiki Ryoho system founded by Dr Mikao Usui. However as with many forms of energy healing, it is common that many sub branches or modalities may form, evolving and changing over time. The modality i have trained under holds a different name, which was trademarked as a benchmark for the standard and quality of training for all its students. The techniques and standards adhere strictly to the original guidelines of the Usui method. Ensure to look into the lineage and background of your therapist/teacher, and that they are following the teachings of the original Usui method. The main differences/standards of my modality are: - Pre assessment of the students emotional and mental state prior to learning, including a hands on treatment - 4 Attunements per level. (When you are attuned to Reiki energy/guides) - Minimum number of practice treatments required between each level. - Minimum training time period before advancing at each level. - Additional training tools such as pendulum, crystals, and meditation techniques.
What is involved in a treatment? Typically treatments take 60 minutes and involves the therapist placing their hands on 10 various points of your body to align and balance your seven chakras. Each chakra can be affected by the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical body, and the therapist will channel energy to harmonize the body and mind. This will help to identify any blockages in the client, enhancing general health and wellbeing, and boosting the immune system by stimulating the detoxification process in our chakras. Any information that comes up from the session will be discussed briefly during or after the session. - Additional tools During my treatments, i use crystals and the pendulum to enhance the flow of Reiki energy to the client, and pinpoint specific timelines/people that may come up that relate to specific blockages. Recalling an incident/person is not always easy so don't worry whether you do or not. The information is there to help you release blockages quicker, and help us to set the intention to change certain habits, behaviours, patterns that maybe blocking our growth.
Do i need to do anything special to prepare for the treatment? No. Reiki can be performed on anyone who is open to it. It is not necessary to "detox" the body prior to a treatment by fasting, not drinking alcohol, refraining from meat, avoiding sugar etc. Reiki sessions work through clearing your chakras so these aspects are not relevant to your treatment. It can also be safely used alongside conventional medicine, and during medical treatments and procedures. The only thing you need is comfortable clothing to lie down in and an open mind.
What will i feel from the treatment? Every Reiki treatment will differ for each individual, so try not to have expectations or compare your experiences to others. Reiki works on a soul level to help you clear any congestions that are affecting your chakras, now and from the past. As we all have different life experiences, these will come up in your treatments if they are still blocking you from growing in someway. Treatments are generally relaxed and some experience falling asleep, energy movement, peacefulness, or nothing at all. These are just your own senses, and does not mean one experience is better than another. The more treatments you have, the more sensitive and aware you may start to become to the energy being channeled. Occasionally clients can experience heightened emotions such as crying, heavy breathing, sweating etc, which is your bodies way of "detoxing" your congestions naturally. So do not be alarmed if any of these feelings arise, it is quite normal.
Will i have any side effects from the treatment? After your session most clients will feel a relaxed sense of state, up until the next day or so. One Reiki session is equal to around 4 hours sleep. It is possible that you may still continue "detoxing" after your session, so these can sometimes result in more physical releases such as going to the bathroom, coughing, feeling tired, etc. These are common after effects and again differ depending on each individual. On an emotional/mental level, some of the congestions and information that may come up in your treatment can sometimes be uncomfortable or overwhelming, which is necessary for internal growth and to help us to move forward. It maybe that you feel heightened sensitivity or emotions afterwards. If you feel uneasy for any reason after your treatment, consult your therapist immediately.
When should i schedule my next treatment? There is no recommended time for when you should schedule your next session. This can range from weekly, monthly, every 3 months, to never again. The best way is to listen to your own intuition as to when you feel like your body and mind may need the next session, and when you are ready. Treatments can bring up a lot of past congestions that need time to be digested and worked on, before being ready to move on to the next. So be gentle and patient with yourself. There is no need to rush with your own healing. If you are seeking Reiki for health reasons, then in these cases it can sometimes be beneficial to have regular sessions to encourage the healing time for your body to recover.
How to select the right therapist/teacher? Reiki is becoming increasingly more well known in today's world as an alternative holistic healing method, so you most likely do not need to look too far, to find a therapist or teacher. However this can make it more difficult to filter out the good from the bad which affects the standard of the passing on of Reiki over time. Things to consider when looking for a teacher/therapist: 1) RECOMMENDATION: The best place to start is your network. Word of mouth is one of our best reliable sources, so ask around. Knowing that someone has had a treatment or learned with a certain therapist means you can ask first hand from a trusted source about their experiences, and get a feel if it is something you would like to try. Good authentic masters/teachers do not necessarily advertise, so do some investigating and ask around. 2) RESEARCH: Once you have found some recommendations, how do you decide which one to choose? RESEARCH. Connect with the Master/teacher directly if you can, and get a feel of their authenticity. Ask for their website (if they have one), so you can understand a little more in detail of what is involved. If you have any questions or concerns ask them directly. Be sure to research into their method, and that they are fully qualified as a Usui Reiki Master/ Teacher. Note* Although it is natural to want to ask questions, be mindful of their time and energy. General questions to understand what is involved in the session, and what to expect is normal, but if you are looking for more in depth discussions, then save these for the session. 3) CONNECT: It is important in any energy healing that you connect with the therapist who will be "healing" or teaching you a method. So ensure that you feel comfortable with them and their methods, as the relationship between a therapist and client, or a teacher and their student is an important one. Ensure to have a treatment first, before committing to learn any form of healing to ensure you connect with the modality and its principles. This may take experimenting if you are not sure, so do not be afraid to try out different therapists to get a feel of the difference and to see which resonates the most with you. Having a treatment is one thing, but learning the method is another. 4) TRAINING: Look into your Master/Teachers background and the training structure. Reiki is an energy hands on healing therapy which requires the therapist to transfer the energy through their hands to their client. (Distant treatments however can be done without the client present.) In order to be initiated into Reiki, your Teacher needs to attune you to Reiki via attunements that are done directly by placing their hands on you to transfer the Reiki energy to you. Be wary of any method or teachings that offer online or distant attunements. This is not authentic Reiki as you can not be attuned to Reiki without physically being present at any of the levels. Any reputable Master/ Teacher will be happy to answer any questions you have about their training and experience, or have their background available to read online.
Do you do group shares or/and can i bring another person to join my session? No. Reiki treatments are our own personal journey, and should always be done on a one to one basis to get the most out of your treatment. Group sessions are not recommended, mainly for energetic reasons. Reiki works as a hands on energy transfer, so involving other people and even practitioners during the treatment can interfere with your energy, and vice versa. Reiki works on a spiritual, mental, emotional and physical level, so moving from one person to another without "closing" off the energy can leave you and others open to unwanted energy transfer which can affect you. Group shares commonly either involve 2 or more practitioners transferring the energy to one person, or one (or more) practitioners working on several people at a given time. If the Reiki practitioner is trained correctly there is no need for another practitioner to also channel their energy to you, their own reiki energy should be sufficient.
Do you offer Reiki with any other methods to enhance the healing, such as bowls, gongs, etc? No. Reiki is a powerful healing tool that does not need any other method to enhance the energy being channeled. Reiki, singing bowls, gongs, yoga etc, are all powerful healing tools if used corrected, and each one has it's own unique benefits. As each method has its own system, mixing different methods together can sometimes cause energetic reactions. As a Reiki Master, i am trained and fully experienced with the energy i channel in treatments, and am energetically protected on a "Reiki" level. Energetic safety is of importance when channeling Reiki energy, and especially when healing others. Mixing different methods can open up unknown energetic portals or reactions that the therapist is not experienced in. Keep it simple, and enjoy your healing in its purest form. Enjoy as many healing methods that resonate with you, but try to keep them centred around one method during your sessions, whether teaching or receiving.
If you can not mix, how come you combine using crystals and pendulums in your treatments? Crystals are the only other form of healing that we recommend to combine with Reiki treatments. This is because as Reiki Master, one of the additional tools to enhance the energy taught during our course is to work with crystals simultaneously with our reiki energy and guides. The natural energy and vibrations of the crystals, are amplified by the Reiki energy as they work hand in hand with one another. It can also mean those who may not feel comfortable with having a hands on Reiki treatment, can still receive benefits of a crystal healing treatment as we work with the crystals intuitively, knowing where to place them on the body to pinpoint and unblock congestions.
How do distant healing treatments, and energy scans work? Distant treatments are done when the physical person who requires a treatment can not be present. We go through the treatment in the same way as a hands on, and are particularly useful for those who are not nearby, or not in a position to get a hands on treatment. Energy scans are a quick way to check your aura is balanced and not affected by other people's energy. They are a good option when you feel energetically "off" or uncomfortable.
